National Center for Creative Aging

National Center for Creative Aging (NCCA) has launched the first of its kind Directory of Creative Aging Programs in America funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, MetLife Foundation, and The Michelson Foundation. The Directory features arts programs serving older people and includes intergenerational activities in urban, suburban, and rural communities in a variety of settings such as community centers, senior centers, assisted living, adult day care, arts institutions, and libraries. Commander's House Adult and Senior Citizens Center
Where: Commander's House Adult and Senior Citizens Center, 645 S. Main, San Antonio, TX 78204 (map)
A hot home-cooked meal is served Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday at noon in partnership with H.E.B. The cost is $3 and a reservation is required. Every last Wednesday of the month, people with birthdays or anniversaries that month are honored with a musical presentation, cake or an ice cream social. The Commander’s House provides a wide array of programming for people 18 years of age or more with Safety Driving Classes, Book Club, Bunco, Bridge, Bingo, Dominoes, & Wii, Crocheting, Knitting & Quilting, Flower Making, Health and Wellness Programs Holiday luncheons and Dances and much more. In 2003, the City and County Joint Commission on Elderly Affairs, an advisory board comprised of seniors 60+, recommended the creation of centers where seniors could congregate to share meals, participate in activities and access needed services. The centers offer meal programs, social services, arts and crafts, exercise classes, recreation and dance, computer classes, basic health screenings, work search programs and much more. Learn More
