Here is what you need to know about Aid and Attendance Pension Program from Veterans Affairs
Though The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers this program, you need to find a provider that will provide benefits. This can mean that the providers offer the program but only to a limited number of clients. This translates to wait lists so start your research early and even if you are not sure you want a certain location, put your name on the wait list.
The Aid and Attendance Pension Program provides financial assistance to those who lack funds necessary to provide the care they need. The program is available to physically disabled Veterans, a Veteran and one dependent or a surviving spouse. This benefit can include Alzheimer's Assisted Living and other types of senior housing and care services. The program is income qualifying. Many of the residential homes that can help the senior, spouse or family obtain approval for this benefit. However, processing time can take from 2 to 6 months from the date of application. Once approved, the pension is paid directly to the applicant via direct deposit and is retroactive from the first day of the month following receipt by the VA. The Aid and Attendance Pension Program will pay up to:
- Approximately $1,675.00 per month for Veteran and one dependent
- Approximately $1,328.00 per month for Veteran alone
- Approximately $853.00 per month for surviving spouse
- The above pension is a tax-free benefit paid directly to the qualified applicant.
The following eligibly requirements apply:
- Served Active Duty
The Veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day served during a time of war. - Assets
Assets must be less than $80,000.00. Assets do not include your personal residence, automobile or other assets you use on a regular basis - Financial Need
In general there must be less income each year than the cost of care provided including the monthly charges by the assisted living or nursing facility, the cost of doctor's appointment and prescription drugs (non-reimbursed amounts), medical supplies, eye glasses, haring aides, travel to doctor appointments, etc. - Medical Diagnosis
There must be a medical reason why you cannot live independently and need regular assistance and care. Assistance with ADL's, meals, transportation, housekeeping services up to full assisted living or nursing home care will qualify. Typically, if you reside in an assisted living facility you are already qualified in regard to need.
