More About the Town of Castle Rock

The Town of Castle Rock was founded in 1874 after early settlers came to the area seeking gold. Jeremiah Gould one of those first settlers donated 120acres of land establishing the original town. The Town of Castle Rock supports a population of 46,261, today it sits at an elevation of 6,202 feet above sea level in the Black Forest area. The area is noted for its spectacular mini canyons, formed by Cherry creek in addition to rolling meadows bordered with Ponderosa pine and native wildlife.

Castle Rock annually hosts the International annual PGA tournament, held in nearby Castle Pines Village. The Castle Rock Museum is a structure that is in its own right an artifact of the historical Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Stretching between Denver and Old Colorado City (Colorado Springs), it was the first narrow gauge line in the United States. Its builder, General William Jackson Palmer beginning in 1871, chose select communities along its route for rail sidings or depots. The Town Castle Rock became one of several stops along railroad route, and in 1874 was designated as the county seat of Douglas County. The museum offers historical walking tours of the town and starting May 15, 2011 Trolley tours will begin in one hour intervals. Recently, the museum has displayed fossils confirming Castle Rock once a tropical rain forest prior to a geological uplift of terrain dramatically changing the landscape to the high plain it sits on today.
