Illinois Department on Aging
The Illinois Department on Aging helps older people live independently in their own homes and communities.
As the population ages, services and programs for older people must evolve as well because longevity means
more when quality of life is enhanced. To best serve older adults, we must also serve their families and
teach younger people about the realities of aging, so many of our programs have an intergenerational
emphasis. Working with Area Agencies on Aging, community-based service providers and older people
themselves, the Illinois Department on Aging strives to improve quality of life for current and future
generations of older Illinoisans. Visit our website for more information.

Kyphon
Since 50 percent of women and 25 percent of men older than 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in
their lifetime and bone loss can begin as early as 25, now is the time to take a closer look at osteoporosis
and new options for treating fractures caused by osteoporosis. Balloon Kyphoplasty can restore vertebral
body height, significantly reduce back pain and increase mobility, often shortly after the procedure. In
addition to pain reduction, patients experience an increased ability to return to such simple, everyday
activities as walking, reaching, bending and lifting.

New Assisted-living Buildings Supported with Low Cost Construction Loans
Demand for low-cost assisted living buildings has prompted the state of Illinois to lift a moratorium on
building applications for special low cost assisted living buildings that accept Medicaid as of October
2004. Developers have until January 14 to submit applications for new buildings. The state estimates that 35
to 40 new buildings will be approved by the deadline. These new assisted living buildings when completed
will offer the state's Supportive Living Program. Contact Illinois Department on Aging for more information.
