Women On Wheels is a collaboration between The Women's Fund of
Greater Birmingham and United Way of Central Alabama. The purpose of this project is to coordinate and/or
provide access primarily for women, ages 60+ (but will not exclude men) to non-emergency medical
appointments and services. The focus of the pilot project is to provide a single point-of-contact for
coordination of non-emergency medical transportation as well as to provide effective coordination of
existing resources.
The Metropolitan Church of God, the project's first partner church, launched the on-the-ground pilot in
January 2006. Twelve volunteers from the church were trained. Those trained then drove those who needed
transportation to non-emergency medically related appointments and served as companions during appointments.
The WOW orientation was held on November 9, 2005 at the Metropolitan Church of God, where a certificate
of recognition was given to Reverend Tom Fant on behalf of the Women's Fund of Greater Alabama and United
Way of Central Alabama. Shown above from left to right are Ms. Ann McMillan with Wachovia Bank and a member
of the Women's Fund Advisory Board, Ms. Shirley Worthington with United Way of Central Alabama, and Reverend
Tom Fant, Metropolitan Church of God. We are looking forward to a very successful partnership!
WOW is looking for more partners in the community to strengthen the program. If your church would like
to become volunteer drivers or if your medical facility would like to make your services more accessible to
seniors, please contact Meschelle Johnson at 205-325-8787, Ext. 24. |
