This Thursday, August 26th, the boot leather of the Old West, a touch of county fair, and a free, space-age, balance screening all met together in Colorado Springs at The Inn at Garden Plaza, one of Colorado’s premier, senior communities. The celebration was their 10th anniversary and the theme was Wild, Wild West. Approaching the front portico’s spacious, shaded driveway, I was met at once with the twang of country singer Mike Smith, the aroma of barbecued brats, corndogs, and Polish sausage, kids waiting with puffs of cotton candy for “Miss Kiddee” (a la Miss Kitty of Gunsmoke fame), dressed up clown cute, to twist them an elaborate balloon animal. And that was just the foreground!
Beyond, on the front lawn, was a compact petting zoo replete with sheep, donkeys and colorful chickens. Just inside, was the signup for a prize raffle, and behind that, a free, photo-op to have your face captured as the inset for an Old West Wanted poster. Through the adjoining doorway, the dance floor featured a polished, senior square dance ensemble do-si-do-ing and promenading about with a cheerful caller keeping time to the music. The Café, one door further on, and decorated with cowboy hats and horseshoe cutouts, offered free ice-cream and popcorn while just outside staff manned the Blood Pressure Clinic.
For all that, the afternoon would not be complete without a stop at the Biodex station: a cutting edge, balance diagnostic where friendly physical therapists would stand us atop a high-tech dais that registered our posture and balance on a facing screen that we controlled by shifting our weight. More fun than a carnival ride for those of us past our rollercoaster years! The setting? An enclosed walkway overlooking a delightfully manicured courtyard.
The grand prize wasn’t so much any of the giveaways as much as the opportunity to meet Jeanne Long, herself, the “Grownup on the Go” hostess of KCMN’s Thursday morning’s 10:30 radio program, herself, a resident of the Inn. And, speaking of residents: their Western dress and the good time they shared with visitors told a story of contentedness that will endure past this day’s delightful festivities.
