Exceptional caregivers are individuals with a true passion for caring that find their work rewarding and fulfilling. They are often astonished that others see their work as outstanding. This story will touch your heart and instill a renewed faith in people who make a difference.
A client afflicted with dementia and terminal cancer was nearing the end of her life. She awoke one morning very alert and knowing what she needed to make her life right before passing. She spoke for hours about her ex-husband and how much she really did love him. She pleaded to see him.
She also wanted to have coffee with her son, but he was working in Washington D.C. He had just visited her in Colorado but had returned to work. She was remembering him sharing his coffee with her and was missing him. The caregiver contacted her manager and through muffled tears, explained this situation.
The ex-husband was called and after putting aside his own fears, the gentleman agreed to come over and visit. In the meantime, the son was contacted about his mother's request. He was quite dumbfounded, but agreed that he could leave his business meeting and "have coffee with mom and dad."
As the coffeepot was brewing at home, Dad settled into a chair by Mom's bedside. He asked her if she was okay. With a shake of her head and saddened eyes she replied, "No, I'm not." They had not seen each other for months. He held her hand and they spoke softly of good things.
The son called home to talk to his parents and drink coffee with Mom. He had a cup in his office and the three reminisced over the phone. The caregiver stood outside the room to offer privacy. She smiled through her tears and her wisdom was praised by the others who witnessed this amazing day of absolution.
