In today's economy many people are finding it difficult to make ends meet. This is particularly true for seniors on fixed incomes.

With the housing market in turmoil, gas prices at record levels and inflation taking overt our economy, many seniors are left with few options to live their retirement years in an acceptable manner. However, in Lee County Habitat for Humanity has come to the rescue. In 2006, the well known organization opened its first senior housing complex in North Ft Myers. The 60 unit facility is a rental project and offers units at an affordable monthly rent of $425. Each unit is 525 square feet and contains a spacious carpeted bedroom with double closets, a combination living / dining room, a handicapped-accessible bathroom with a walk in shower, all new appliances including double sinks in the kitchen, range, microwave and full sized refrigerator. There is a stackable washer/dryer, convenient drive up parking and a community courtyard.

While many landlords have inflated their rents to capitalize on the growing demand by seniors for affordable housing in Southwest Florida. Habitat for Humanity exists to eliminate substandard housing and provide modern, safe and attractive units for our senior community at a rent most can afford.

The housing complex is located across the street from homes and offices and shopping is easily accessible. Understanding that many seniors want a home like atmosphere the designers of the project created ten separate buildings with six apartments each in a u-shaped configuration. Thus a neighborhood was created to insure a feeling of intimacy among the residents.

In order to qualify for this unique housing alternative you must be 55 or older and either a US citizen or have a permanent resident alien green card. A maximum of two occupants are allowed per unit and no pets are allowed. For more information about this new concept in housing call Habitat for Humanity at 239-652-0434.
