You probably have already heard that "the digital TV transition is coming next February." But, digital TV (DTV) is here now! Anyone who owns a newer television set with a built-in digital tuner or who connects a converter box to their existing TV set can enjoy the benefits DTV offers - expanded program and channel choices and a more vivid viewing experience.
This technology upgrade affects all TVs that rely on over-the-air broadcasting. If you subscribe to cable or satellite, you need do nothing to continue receiving the channels you now receive after the transition. But if you want to enjoy digital or high definition channels, you will need to purchase an upgraded digital subscription package from your provider.
Even viewers living in homes with cable or satellite are reminded that TVs in spare bedrooms, kitchens or garages not connected to cable or satellite will need to get ready for the transition.
If you want to keep using your older television set and receive free, over-the-air television, all you need to do is buy a converter box ( $50 to $60) for each television you have. The federal government is making converter box coupons available to help consumers make the transition.
If you haven't yet applied for your converter box coupons, call or log on to request them today www.dtv2009.gov or call 1-888-DTV-2009. Coupons are available only while supplies last. Each household is eligible for two and each coupon is good for $40 off a converter box.
If you've already received your converter box coupons, now is the time to use them! DTV is already available, and your coupons expire 90 days after you receive them. So don't wait.
When you receive your coupons, you'll also get a list of retailers in your zip code area who carry the boxes as well as a list of boxes that have been certified.
Remember to call ahead to stores to ensure they have the right kind and priced box for you.
