The decision to choose cremation as an alternative to traditional burials is becoming more and more popular. Memorializing someone who has chosen cremation does not have to be problematic, and in fact, has a myriad of options available. The simplest is to place the cremains in an urn and store that urn somewhere. Urns can be as simple as a plastic container or as elaborate as a custom designed, one-of-a-kind creation, that while sitting on the living room bookshelf, looks more like a work of art than a cremation urn. Urns can be purchased at most memorial outlets and funeral homes. Another option involves purchasing a plot at your local cemetery and either interring the cremains or putting them in a granite memorial that is designed for that purpose. Most cemeteries allow multiple cremation burials in one grave space, so this approach still offers a substantial financial savings while providing a place where future generations can go and experience a connection to their family heritage. Memorials themselves are as diverse as your imagination and can be created to allow for multiple names. Most memorials can also be coupled with receptacles for cremains so that the cremains become an integral part of the memorial. Some cemeteries have created large columbariums in which cremains can be placed and the doors lettered with the person’s name and dates. While the costs on these vary, usually they do not allow for a personal inscription and rarely have any design work. Too often cremated remains get set aside or scattered without any lasting reminder for generations to come of the accomplishments and creations of that person’s life. Memorialization enables us to preserve a precious piece of our heritage and create a lasting tribute for our children and their families.
