As the older adult population grows rapidly in Colorado, seniors face a maze of fragmented programs and services. The population of Coloradans ages 60+ is expected to increase by nearly 90 percent by the year 2020. There will be more than 1,160,000 state residents over age 60 by that time! Most older adults say they would like to age with as much independence and dignity as possible in their own communities. But when families are isolated, transportation can be a challenge and access to important services such as health care can be complicated. Younger relatives and caregivers often have many other responsibilities in addition to caring for older family members. Seniors in Colorado need to be offered coordinated care systems that can simplify the maze of support options at the local level if they would like to stay at home. Fortunately, non-profit organizations like Seniors’ Resource Center can deliver one-stop shopping when it comes to community-based services like handicapped-accessible transportation, in-home care, adult day/respite programs, minor home repairs and mental health referrals. These programs can dramatically improve the quality of life for seniors and keep them engaged in their communities. They reduce strain on medical systems, keep household costs down and invigorates families. Older adults also can stay active by volunteering. Seniors offer a wealth of experience, knowledge and skills that can strengthen vital institutions such as schools, libraries, parks and recreation facilities, and non-profit organizations. Seniors who volunteer make a huge difference in the lives of others. In 10 counties in the western metro Denver area and the foothills, Seniors’ Resource Center works in partnership with older persons and the community to provide centralized and coordinated service, information, education and leadership. |
