Attitude can have a Dramatic Effect on your HealthArticle submitted by Tara Gleave RN, is a nurse for Applegate Home Health & Hospice out of their American Fork branch. If you have any questions about Home Health, Hospice, or a positive attitude, please give her a call at 801-763-0101. Studies have shown that those of us who see the proverbial glass as half empty may be nearly four times more likely to become ill than their more optimistic peers. According to a new report, psychological stress, particularly the chronic type that may accompany a neurotic or negative personality, is a risk factor for colds. The finding indicates that increased levels of psychological stress are moderately associated with the common cold. While the common cold is rarely serious, it can often move into a more serious problem if compounded with other health issues related to the aging process. To investigate the theory that stress increased the likelihood of developing a cold, the researches surveyed more than 1,100 Spanish university and students at regular intervals over a 1-year period. The study looked in depth on different types of stress including stressful life events, perceived stress, having a generally negative outlook and neurotic personality compared with a positive and extroverted one. Individuals with a negative outlook were at greater risk of developing colds or other illness regardless of their use of vitamin C and zinc, or even smoking and drinking habits. As a home care and hospice nurse I put the theory to the test every day. In my many years of caregiving I have noticed that patients with optimistic attitudes and positive thoughts have less incidence of illness and appear to heal faster. Not only do I notice the difference with my patients, but with myself. Changing your attitude can consist of something as small as making yourself smile for 30 seconds. It is the small efforts that make a difference in the long run. You have the power to make a significant change in your life, and in the life of the ones you love, and it all starts with a little smile. |
