Fall Prevention Information & Tips
- One out of every three persons over age 65 falls at least once each year.
- Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths in people over age 65.
- Over 9000 people over age 65 die each year due to fall-related injuries.
- 87% of fractures are due to falls.
- Most falls happen at home.
- Most falls that happen at home are preventable.
General Tips for Prevention Falls at Home:
- Begin and maintain a regular exercise program.
- Regular exercise helps improve strength, balance and flexibility.
- Make your home safer. Make modifications to your home as needed:
- Install grab bars
- Improve lighting
- Remove tripping hazards
- Stairways are clear of objects which could cause a person to trip
- Firmly anchored handrails
- Throw rugs are skid-proof and lay flat on the floor
- Carpets are securely anchored
- Proper footwear is worn to prevent slips, trips and falls
- Have your doctor check your current medications. Some affect balance and/or cause drowsiness.
- Have your vision checked.
