Many people ask, "What is Respite Care ?" Respite care is a short-term rest or break (1 to 30 days) for Caregivers and for a Patient/ Resident.

For the primary Caregiver (PCG) it gives them a chance to spend time with family or friends - to "recharge their batteries". Sometimes Respite care is needed because the PCG is the one that needs hospitalization. Respite care gives the PCG the opportunity to take care of themselves, knowing their Loved One is being taken care of by qualified staff. For the Patient/ Resident, it provides them the opportunity to socialize, interact with others and participate in activities at their skill level.

There are many forms of Respite Care in-home, adult day care, residential, informal and emergency situation Respite Care. It is a service provided by many Home Health Agencies, Hospice, Long-Term Care, Assisted Living, and Day Care Facilities.

Every facility or organization will have their own criteria and pricing. It is important to pre-plan and visit several facilities prior to an admission - even though it is only temporary. Some Respite Care providers offer specialized care, such as Alzheimer's disease/ dementia care.

Some important questions to ask:

Be open, honest and clear of your expectations, including limitations and preferences of your Loved One. This open dialog will make the temporary transition easier for you, your Loved One and the staff that will provide the care. Sometimes it is very hard for PCG to allow someone else to take care of his or her Loved One (guilt, anxiety, concerns of care, etc). But it is important to remember to take care of you.

To quote Dr. Patricio Reyes, Director of Cognitive Disorders Program of Barrow's Neurological Institute, "I've never lost a patient in my office.... But I have lost three caregivers - PLEASE take care of yourself!".
