New Treatment for The Aging EyeArticle submitted by Donald W. Benefield, MD. For additional information contact Donald W. Benefield, MD, Ophthalmologist, Gulfport, at 228-896-5527. Could you imagine being at a restaurant with your son, daughter or their spouse and you can see the menu without glasses but they cannot? Well, what if you drove them and could even see the road signs and the dashboard without your glasses? If you had the new ReZoom(tm) lens implanted in your eyes this could be a possibility. ReZoom(tm) is a lens implant that can give people a wide range if vision without glasses. Now people with or without cataracts can see well at a distance and up close without eyewear. This second-generation lens replacement is injected through a micro incision and unrolls into the natural lens bag that previously contained the patient's failed or cloudy (cataractous) lens. The "Freedom Cataract Procedure" developed over the past 19 years removes the cataract. This is a no-shot, no-stitch, no-cautory, no-patch, no-red eye or-bruise technique. It also reduces or eliminates astigmatism (football-shape of the eye) so one can see well and feel fine quickly and safely. With the "Freedom Cataract Procedure" the ReZoom(tm) may be used and the patient can be more independent from glasses. Of all patients receiving this procedure, 92% report seldom or never having to wear glasses. Some occasionally wear reading glasses for small print. The ReZoom(tm) lens implant is an alternative to the standard monofocal intraocular lens. More testing and services are offered with the ReZoom, and the $1250 price tag is not for everyone. ReZoom(tm) patients may see more halos around lights for the first few weeks or months, but this will get better with time. Patients report any temporary minor discomfort to be well worth the trade-off for better range of vision and a better quality of life. |
