Many of us hope to remain in our own homes throughout our senior years. Unfortunately, as we become susceptible to the limitations of aging, activities that were once easy and enjoyable can become difficult. The presence of a companion several hours a day can mean greater independence, and peace of mind. Companions reconnect the homebound and the elderly to the outside world and provide a sense of security.

Family members often feel that there is no alternative but to assume the responsibility of day-to-day care for their spouse, parent, or relative which can put a tremendous strain on the relationship, impact their family dynamics and business responsibilities. The family caregiver can become overwhelmed leading to feelings of resentment. The person receiving care experiences guilt and diminished self-worth for shifting this burden on to a loved one. This situation is complicated when family members don't live nearby and take on the role of caregiver from a distance. A home companion can be the perfect solution.

Companions help care for you or someone you care about, providing assistance with activities of daily living including, but not limited to, meal preparation, light housekeeping, supervision with dressing, bathing, and grooming, transportation and assistance with errands, shopping, outings, and appointments. Seniors also benefit from the companionship itself and companions can detect changes that may signify a medical or other problem. Unlike home health aides, companions do not provide hands-on care, such as would be required for bedridden individuals, but do offer medication reminders.

Live-in, live-out, long or short-term, at-home or at another facility, companions are available that can provide reliable care that can make all the difference. When selecting a home companion be sure to look for one that understands that home care is all about the comforts of familiar surroundings and providing a warm and nurturing environment.
