Are you searching for ways to use your talents and skills to help others and make a difference? The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program invites you to share your love of reading by becoming an OASIS tutor.

It has been demonstrated that a child who can not read well will have difficulty throughout his/her school experience. As an older adult you are a vital resource for society with a lifetime of experience to share. Training and monthly support meetings will prepare you, so you don't need previous teaching experience. All it takes is a willingness to give one hour per week, during the school year and of course compassion and patience. You will work with a child in grades 1, 2 or 3. You will meet with the same child each week to read books and share experiences. You can choose from 41 Northside ISD elementary schools or 10 San Antonio ISD schools in which to tutor. And more importantly, you'll provide encouragement, motivation and become a positive role model for students who might not have such a person in their life. Plus you'll have fun doing it.

Our tutor training dates are October 20 and 21 and November 29 and 30th, from 10:15 am to 4:15 pm at the OASIS Center, 6161 NW Loop 410. Call 647-2546 to register.

OASIS, which is sponsored locally by Foley's, City of San Antonio, WellMed, and Warm Springs Rehabilitation System is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of older adults. OASIS gives people age 50 and up the chance to continue their personnel growth and meaningful service to the community. There is no membership fee.

"Through your volunteer efforts, the educational experience of our "at-risk" students is enriched beyond anything we would otherwise be able to provide." - School Administrator.
