Part D is the new Medicare prescription drug benefit, which began in 2006. Here's what you need to know about the changes.

Who qualifies for a prescription drug plan (PDP)?
People with Medicare can enroll in a PDP. PDPs are available from primary insurers like Humana. The initial enrollment period is from Nov. 15, 2005, to May 15, 2006.

How do you join a PDP?
You can join a PDP if you have an Original Medicare or Medigap plan. You may get a PDP automatically if you belong to a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan. Combined MA and prescription drug plans are called MA-PDs.

What's the cost of a PDP?
Premium costs vary. Some plans may offer the standard coverage for a low premium or richer coverage for a higher premium.

If you don't have prescription drug coverage with your Medicare plan or Medigap policy, consider joining a PDP or an MA-PD. When comparing plans, make a list of the medications you take. Since different PDPs cover different drugs, this list will help you choose the plan that meets your needs.
