What Can You Do About Diabetes?Article submitted by Stephanie Willis, ADA Market Director. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) will hold its signature fundraising event, the "America's Walk for Diabetes" (AWFD), on Saturday, April 8, 2006 at Meadow Brook Office Park. This 5k (3.2 miles) walkathon is the ADA's largest family-oriented fund raising event. The AWFD is an eventful day for the entire family with great food, lively entertainment, carnival games and contests - celebrating the fundraising accomplishments of our teams and individual participants and bringing us a step closer to making diabetes a thing of the past. The Birmingham Walk has a long history of success, raising more than $1.2 million in walker dollars and corporate sponsorships over the last six years. In-kind donations during the past six years added another $360,000 to that amount. The 2005 Corporate Walk Chairman is Curtis James, CEO of St. Vincent's Hospital. Under his leadership, we expect the 2006 Walk to be an even greater success, with over 2,000 walkers anticipated. Additionally, the Walk will once again feature the Fitness & Wellness Festival - a unique opportunity for event sponsors and health-related vendors to interact with and provide valuable information to the community. Through your commitment to the ADA, 80% of every dollar raised by this event funds research for a cure, prevention of diabetes and it's complications, awareness and outreach programs as well as our mission to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The AWFD raises nearly $20 million to find a cure for diabetes and to support our mission, so team up with the ADA to make every step count. For more information on becoming a corporate sponsor or how you can participate as an individual walker or as a member of a walk team, contact Jaime Weaver, ADA Market Manager, at 1-800-676-4065, ext 3073. |
