A Review of Prescription Drug Discounts

There are many different discount cards available. These different cards lead to much confusion. Following is a review of some of the most common ones available.

Patient Assistance Programs
These programs are available through the pharmaceutical companies. Each company has different financial requirements to be able to qualify for the program. For more information contact each specific pharmaceutical company or contact your local pharmacist.

Together Rx Card
This is a prescription savings program that offers a free, easy way to save approximately 20%-40% on some brand name medicines and, in many cases, (depending on your prescription and pharmacy). This card is sponsored by several different pharmaceutical companies and qualifications are based on income.

Share Card Program
This card is provided through Pfizer and provides patients with Pfizer brand name prescription medications for $15 for a 30-day supply. Qualifications for this program are

"Lilly Answers" Program
This card is provided through Eli Lilly and Company. It provides patients with Eli Lilly prescription medications for $12 for a 30-day supply. Qualifications for this program are based on income.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield C+
The Medicare supplement insurance provides 10% discount off the price of all prescription medications.

People's Choice
This card is available for $7.95 per month with a savings from 15%-65% with an average of about 20%. This card is not accepted at all pharmacies and not all prescriptions will receive a discount.

AARP
AARP Pharmacy Services provides prescription and pharmacy services to AARP members as part of the collection of AARP Health Care Options. The cost is $19.95 per year with a savings of 5%-47%. Member to AARP cost $12.50 per year.

Medicare Prescription Drug Discount Cards
Beginning January 1, 2006 Medicare prescription drug coverage will be available to all people with Medicare. Medicare is encouraging seniors, family and friends to find out more and sign up. You can get this new coverage by joining a Medicare prescription drug plan. Enrollment starts in November 2005. To find out more about Medicare drug coverage all you have to do is visit the website or call 1-800-633-4227. TTY users may call 877-486-2048. This voluntary benefit is expected to provide seniors with prescription drug savings. People with Medicare who have lower incomes will save more through both the Medicare-approved cards and the prescription drug coverage.
