Baptist - DiabetesFor more information, call 284-2800 or 1-800-400-5800. There are 18.2 million people in the United States, 6.3% of the population, who have diabetes. Often diabetes goes undiagnosed because many of its symptoms seem so harmless. Recent studies indicate that the early detection of diabetes symptoms and treatment can decrease the chance of developing the complications of diabetes. Some diabetes symptoms include: frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability, and blurry vision. Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles. Scientific research has proven that controlling blood glucose levels can reduce the risk of developing long-term complications of diabetes. Helping to control your blood glucose levels over the long term is what Baptist Hospital Diabetes Center is all about. The Diabetes Center staff provides education and support through outpatient and inpatient services. Outpatient services include educational classes and counseling on topics such as blood glucose monitoring, insulin self-management skills, oral medication self-management skills, nutrition counseling and meal planning, and stress management. Monthly diabetes support groups are also available. |
