We're all aware of foster care... for kids. But there is an alternative for adults needing care as well and most people are unaware that it exists. In Maricopa County alone, 175 families provide Adult Foster Care in their own homes for some of the valley's most vulnerable. Caregivers take in up to four elderly or disabled individuals into their home and provide personalized care and a family environment. It's not just the room, board and the care required by law, its relationships and quality of life, at a time when we are most needy.

The homes provide care for private pay or individuals on Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS). Private pay rates range from $1200 - $2000. Adult Foster Care has become the "non-profit" of the Assisted Living industry, providing quality home and community based care at affordable rates.

AFC homes are carefully evaluated and monitored on a regular basis. After a careful screening and thorough training by the Foundation For Senior Living, the homes are certified by Maricopa Integrated Health Systems and monitored every six months for rule compliance and quality of care. Foundation For Senior Living also investigates concerns as well as providing on-going education, support and assistance to the caregivers. The supervision, selection process and support provided in the AFC homes offer families the assurance that their loved one is cared for with both quality and compassion.

Who are these Adult Foster Care Sponsors? All have been caregivers before. They apply for the program because they see the need, they believe their family has love and nurture to offer, and they want to offer what most people desire - relationships and a sense of belong, in addition to the personal care. There are a wide variety of families and homes, but all seem to offer a home, not just a house.
The homes provide 24 supervision, meals, personal care, medication assistance, transportation and recreational opportunities. AFC homes can care for residents who need total care and work closely with hospice. There are even homes that specialize in caring for younger people with head injuries, or those with behavioral issues, ventilators or diabetes.

When you are searching for a home for yourself or a loved one, the choices can be confusing. The Foundation For Senior Living offers personalized assistance in finding a home near you that meets the particular needs of the individual. One call to the AFC program can provide valuable, personalized information about a home near you fit the particular need.
