The Human Integrative Physiology Laboratory at the University of Colorado-Boulder is dedicated to research investigating the effects of aging and obesity on cardiovascular and metabolic function in humans. Not only are we interested in the physiological effects but we are also interested in the mechanisms by which these effects of aging and obesity are mediated. With the aim of answering some of these questions we are currently conducting research that encompasses a wide array of topics including: mechanisms associated with cardiovascular aging due to increased oxidative stress and how weight loss influences those changes; how hormone replacement and exercise influence cardiovascular health in women; the underlying mechanisms that bring about changes in resting metabolic rate seen with age; and mechanisms associated with changes in arterial function due to age and habitual exercise.

We hope this research will lead to a better understanding of how the body ages which might lead to preventative measures that challenge the effects of aging. We also hope to gain more insight on the response of the body to weight gain and how that may influence your cardiovascular health.

The Human Integrative Physiology Laboratory is always looking for healthy individuals who would like to help us in that endeavor by volunteering to be a participant in a research study. If you volunteer you will receive a free medical screening and diagnostic testing (bone scans, exercise stress tests, ultrasound, blood tests) completed by professional medical personnel and financial compensation for your time.
