Many people in their 70s, 80s, and 90s live full, rich lives in their own home or Assisted Living with little or no assistance,
but there are those with severe or progressive illnesses who may benefit from the kind of 24-hour attention that is available in a
nursing facility. Here are tips for selecting the right nursing facility.
Whether your loved one needs temporary or permanent placement, there are many variables to consider. For example, location,
rehabilitation programs, costs, religious services and or accommodations may be your special concern. . Depending on the needs of
the potential resident, the following checklist may help you get the answers you need:
Things to Observe During Your Visit:
- Is the home well lit?
- Are rooms attractive, clean, comfortable?
- Are resident rooms personalized?
- Are rooms large enough to maneuver a wheelchair?
- Are there handrails in the hallways and grab bars in the bathrooms?
- Are there call lights by beds and toilet?
- Do residents appear well groomed?
- Are residents out of bed and out of their rooms?
- Is there a sink in each bathroom?
- Are residents currently engaged in activities?
- How do staff members interact with residents?
- Is the staff courteous and do they address residents by name?
- Is the facility free of overwhelming odors?
Questions to Ask Staff:
- Are beds available?
- What payment options are available for coverage?
- If Medicaid and/or Medicare coverage is needed, is the home certified?
- Does the facility have an operating agreement with a nearby hospital for emergencies?
- Is there a physical therapy program available under the direction of a qualified physical therapist? Are occupational and
speech therapy offered?
- How does the facility match roommates?
- How are residents and families involved in plans of treatment?
- Are beautician and barber services available?
- How are concerns or problems handled?
- Is a social worker available to assist families and residents?
