It used to be when the elderly could no longer care for all of their needs, the only alternative was a nursing home placement. Now, they have the choice of receiving help in their homes with laundry, meal preparation, light housekeeping and companionship, for now there are companies that cater to the elderly who do not need constant care, but do need assistance with their activities of daily living (ADL's).

The looming question is how does a family safely choose a company to meet their loved one's needs? Whether employing an individual or a company, YOU are ultimately responsible for insuring your safety, financial security and peace of mind. The following are vital steps to take.

  • Always verify that the applicant has at least six POSITIVE references.
  • Do not allow anyone into your home unless the proper criminal background checks have been performed.
  • Confirm that the individual carries the proper insurance, including workers' compensation, liability and criminal bond insurance. If using a company, ask if each employee is individually insured and bonded rather than the company as a whole. Ask to see their insurance certificates.
  • Make sure to ask whether the employee pays taxes whether they are self-employed or work for a company. Do not be afraid to ask for written proof.
  • Ask if the applicant is properly trained for whatever work is being performed in your home.
  • Make sure the person you hire has a valid driver's license and automobile insurance if you will be riding in the car. You should also check his or her driving record.

Following these guidelines will not only insure your safety and peace of mind, but it will also allow you to make a more informed choice about whom you employ. Chances are that taking the above precautions will enhance the quality and duration of the working relationship that will develop between employer and employee. While it may be appealing to hire the individual or company whose fees are lower, remember, in the long run, it may cost you more. Two old adages hold true here-knowledge is power, and you get what you pay for!
