There are so many senior living options today, how do you know which is the right one for you or your loved ones?

This decision is complex and can have long-lasting consequences. You want to make a choice that is not only wise, but also practical for the way you and your family live.

Start by paying attention to "word of mouth" advertising. The best recommendations are from people who have used the facility or services before. When applicable, check out Health Department survey results. Then check out the residence itself. Look at the website and go for a personal visit.

Look at more than just the beautiful surroundings and furnishings. Talk with the direct care staff. Do they demonstrate a genuine compassion for the people in their care? Are they happy? Is staff turnover high? Ask the residents if the activities are meaningful to them. Ask if you can stay for a meal. Is the residence located near enough to your home for frequent visits? Are there ample opportunities for residents to participate in community life?

Think about the future. What will happen if you run out of private funds? What if you need more intensive nursing care? Will you be forced to leave your new home and start the search all over again?

Do your homework and choose wisely.
