When does Medicare pay for an ambulance? Here are some guidelines: Medicare will only pay for ambulance services that are deemed medically necessary and reasonable for the condition of the patient. Ambulance services are not covered or paid for by Medicare if other modes of transportation, like car or taxi for example, could have been used without endangering the patient's health. If the decision to use an ambulance is based on the convenience of the patient or his/her family, then the patient is responsible for payment of the ambulance transport. For more information and to learn about Medicare's complete guidelines as to what is and is not considered a medical necessity, please contact American Medical Response at 228-897-1196.
