Foster Grandparent ProgramArticle submitted by the Foster Grandparent Program. You get much more than you give when you work with at-risk children at schools and childcare centers as part of the Volunteers of America Foster Grandparent Program. Foster Grandparents help children - at one of the 65 partner schools and childcare centers-by giving them emotional support and teaching them their colors, shapes and numbers. Mary McClure talks about what she likes most about being a Foster Grandparent in the Foster Grandparent Program - "To be able to be there when the kids cry and to comfort them. They are precious with their cute smiles and how happy I am to hear them call me Grandma." Foster Grandparents earn up to $212 a month tax-free to help defray any expenses they might have volunteering with these children plus they're reimbursed for transportation. The money you receive does not affect any other government assistance you may already be receiving including OAP, Medicare/Medicaid, subsidized housing, Social Security and food stamps. To qualify for the program, you must be at least 60 years old, living on a limited income and able to volunteer 20 hours a week. |
