Can you believe the numbers? Currently, 12% of the population is age 65 or older. They exceed 35 million people and will double to 70 million in 25 years. They are healthier, live longer and are more active than their predecessors. Certainly, they feel better about themselves. They exercise, care about their diets and eat nutritiously while keeping their minds active and stimulated. No wonder they are living beyond expectations.
And with this concern for better living, elders have changed their view about seeking assistance for themselves. Where previously, any help was thought, by some, to have a negative connotation, elders have come to realize that this help provides them with a sense of security and well being. Elders and their families can choose between a variety of Medical and Non-medical Services to meet their needs. Skilled care provides licensed, professionals who can administer medications, intravenous injections, tube feedings, wound and incontinence care. Non-medical caregivers, on the other hand, do not need to be certified to perform home helper chores such as companionship, medication reminders, cooking, light housekeeping, laundering and errands. Some non-medical companies offer incidental transportation but you should inquire about this from each one. Non-medical companies, also, vary to the degree of their insurance coverage as it relates to bonding, workers compensation and general liability. When speaking with a service representative, ask about their policy in performing criminal screening and verification of referrals. The more concerned they are about the reputation and character of the people they employ as caregivers, the greater will be your satisfaction. Therefore, be judicious when soliciting a company and the happiness and safety of our seniors will be preserved.
